Our Story
At Fat Hen Brewing Company, we believe great beer is the perfect blend of artistry, passion, and community. Our founders—Steve Nametz, Doug Helferich, and Steven Helferich—each bring a shared belief that a brewery should be a place where exceptional beer, delicious food, and authentic ambiance come together to create new memories and friendships for every patron.
Steven Helferich brings a unique mix of science and technology to the team, drawing on his Chemical Engineering degree from Cornell University and an MBA from the University of Southern California. After a career in software development spanning New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, Steven returned to New England to co-found Oak & Iron with his father. When the pandemic encouraged him to reflect on his path, Steven joined forces with Steve and Doug to create Fat Hen Brewing Company, blending his scientific and entrepreneurial experience into every pint.
Together, the team is united by their shared vision of brewing exceptional beer while fostering a sense of connection and joy. Fat Hen Brewing Company is more than just a brewery—it’s a celebration of creativity, craft, and community.
Steve Nametz discovered his love for brewing while working as the head brewer at Oak & Iron, apprenticing under a master brewer and completing advanced courses at Siebel University. With a degree in Contemporary Writing & Production from Berklee College of Music, Steve’s background as a musician and producer adds a creative, harmonious approach to crafting beer that’s as balanced as it is bold.
Doug Helferich, a graduate of Duke University with degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Economics, combines technical expertise with a sharp business acumen. Having worked across industries in finance, marketing, and product management, Doug’s passion for beverages drives his pursuit of truly excellent beer. His global tasting experiences with both modern and traditional styles inspire the creativity and precision behind Fat Hen’s brews.
